Mnemic - _Passenger_
(Nuclear Blast, 2007)
by: Jackie Smit (6.5 out of 10)
You have to admire this Danish troupe's workhorse ethic, releasing their third album in almost as many years despite an almost habitual touring schedule and a replacement stepping into the shoes of former vocalist, Michael Bøgballe. The quality of their work likewise hasn't taken a beating despite an ethos that would leave most creatively spent, and _Passenger_ wastes little time in making short work of the qualitative precedent set by either of its predecessors.

The trouble however, remains Mnemic's bantam sense of dynamics. While tossing together the best bits from Meshuggah, Fear Factory and The Haunted's respective discographies into one corrosive mix may sound like a good idea on paper, it amounts to meaningless caterwauling when said influences are simultaneously jostling for position on a virtually homogenous basis.

Make no mistake: when the formula works, as it does spectacularly on "Pigfuck" and "Electronic ID Conspiracy", it can stun a water buffalo at forty paces. But for the time being, Mnemic's quest for cyber thrash nirvana looks set to take them at least another album.
