Drug Honkey - _Hail Satan_
(Independent, 2005)
by: Quentin Kalis (6.5 out of 10)
What would Abruptum have sounded like if, instead of indulging in bouts of self-inflicted torture (an oft-repeated and suspicious anecdote which sounds as truthful as a lapdancer on the job), it had a liking for LSD? The result would probably not be too dissimilar to Drug Honkey, who describe their unusual musical trip as "death dub".Numerous trippy effects overlay a bass line, which effectively forms the backbone of a number of songs. The "death" component is primarily in the form of overdriven guitars, unconventional drumming and some death growls. The end result is a dark and dreary atmosphere with a psychedelic edge -- albeit far too dark and moody to be conducive to the usage of recreational pharmaceuticals. But despite their novel sound, for which they should rightly be commended in a world all too willing to embrace unoriginality, it doesn't sound as if the idea has been properly developed, resulting in far too many misses and not enough hits. Drug Honkey have an original idea, which is the hard part; they now need to develop that sound into a potent and unforgettable force.
