Azaghal - _Luciferin Valo_
(Avantgarde, 2006)
by: Pedro Azevedo (6.5 out of 10)
"Black Terror Metal", says the title of the opening track, one of the
few not written in Finnish. Azaghal are not likely to go all melodic
on you, then. Indeed, as expected, their black metal is impregnated
with an old-school feeling, in which the band show a lot of
conviction. Cascading drums, well pronounced riffs and generic black
metal rasps abound, all wrapped up in a production job that is nowhere
near polished but doesn't hurt their delivery either. On tracks like
the back-to-back "Tuhoaja" and "Kuin Lampaat Teuraalle", or "Olematon"
near the end of the record, the band gain enough momentum to
temporarily eclipse the less interesting slower sections. Ultimately, however, the album cannot avoid coming across as a mixed bag. There is no innovation or real progression from its slightly more enjoyable
predecessor _Codex Antitheus_, so what is left for _Luciferin Valo_ to
provide is a few pleasant spins before you forget about it.
