Unearthly Trance - _The Trident_
(Relapse, 2006)
by: T. DePalma (6.5 out of 10)
Concurrent with linking their third album to the dark waters of Greek myth and mysticism, Unearthly Trance's _Trident_ sees a band reborn, breaking from the stigmatic drone vibe that decisively makes and repels listeners, rippling with titanic wrath throughout nine tracks. A welt on the forehead and stiff neck testify: traumatic drums evoke the terrible girth of the Melvins' _Houdini_; sped up, Darkthrone playing through the belly of a whale. Less chaotic and distinct than co-founder Ryan Lypynsky's abandoned vessel Thralldom, _The Trident_ still does not fail to carry out familiar ideas within the group's act without making credible yet again.
