Anything coming out on Tyrant Syndicate, the Peaceville imprint run by Darkthrone's Fenriz and Nocturno Culto, is bound to get a considerable level of attention. German trio Old are unlikely to be an exception, and are naturally described by the much respected Darkthrone guys as something like true bearers of the spirit of underground metal. Somewhere between black and thrash, with their underproduced sound, continuous single guitar buzz and rasped vocals, Old certainly come across as something plucked straight from the depths of the underground. They can put plenty of enthusiasm into their songs, even if their sound is devoid of much impact, but the question is whether they really are something special enough to deserve the extra attention they're going to get. For my taste, they're not; but those to whom anything that takes longer to record in the studio than it does to play back at home may disagree. A competent record as far as what it tries to achieve, but certainly not a particularly impressive one.
