Jesu - _Silver_
(Hydra Head, 2006)
by: T. DePalma (5.5 out of 10)
Justin Broadrick's latest disc peels away the aggression to reveal a sensitive side of the man across four profuse tracks. In the same way Jesu's earlier, more ambiguous sound was shaped into an apparatus of emotional vent, _Silver_ now takes the full plunge over the cliff. The EP sails through effusive combinations of indie-rock a la Codeine and My Bloody Valentine with a glowing electronic ambience. (If Eluvium wrote music for verse, this is what it would sound like.) Sensitivity is only one rub from irritation and Broadrick's vocals, even through his myriad filters, have the typical accent of an artist neutered. The last track, "Dead Eyes", provides a more sensuous recap of the theme and, as usual, the equipment used in the high-caliber production should excite some besides-the-point conversation. On the whole, however, _Silver_ is far too submissive, fractured and contemporary to stand beside past material and is harmed as a personal statement by rendering it into something as obvious and redundant as a pretty pop song.
