Mystic Circle - _The Bloody Path of God_
(Dockyard 1, 2006)

I'll give Mystic Circle this much: they are infinitely better on disc than they are on stage. I may be stepping on a few toes here, but for me the mere mention of this German trio's name recalls a host of abhorrent memories chronicling many a gig spent pondering on small chunks of my life that could have been devoted, with considerably greater reward, to other endeavours. Giving the band the benefit of the doubt, their seventh full-length isn't actually as bad as its hackneyed intro (replete with possibly the most over-quoted Biblical passage in the history of metal) would suggest.Veering heavily back toward their black metal roots, _The Bloody Path of God_ is definitely far from being the boundary-pushing magnum opus that Dockyard 1 would attempt to have you believe, but it does have its moments. The punishing "Unholy Terror", for example, is a pleasing exercise in old-school grimness, combining the clattering malevolence of mid-Nineties Scandinavia with a flurry of wind-tunnel guitar solos that could just as easily have been laid down by Kerry King himself. From a decidedly muted and more traditional departure point there's "The Grim Reaper", a track which could just help to make future Mystic Circle support slots tolerable; something of an achievement in itself. At the end of the day, that really ends up being the point here: it's highly unlikely that a band like this would ever impact anything or anyone over and above a small niche audience, but at least this time round, paying them any attention isn't quite the laborious exercise you'd imagine it to be.
