Ashram - _Shining Silver Skies_
(Equilibrium Music, 2006)
by: Pedro Azevedo (6.5 out of 10)
Pianist Luigi Rubino, violinist Edo Notarloberti and singer Sergio
Panarella (who is also a part-time acoustic guitarist) provide the
fundamental elements for Ashram's neo-classical compositions. This
foundation is then complemented by the participation of guest Leonardo
Massa on cello, who lends a very useful hand. The music is usually
driven by the piano however, with the violin gracefully playing around
it. The crooning vocal style does fit the generally light tone of
these romantically inspired themes, but for my taste it causes the
overall result to feel too gentle and sunny -- nothing against the
quality of the vocals here, but I would rather hear the cello singing,
if you get my meaning. This divergence in taste makes it difficult to
judge _Shining Silver Skies_, because while I can appreciate and enjoy
the likes of instrumentals "Il Mostro" and "Elizabeth" to a great
extent, I remain unable to case more than a passing glance at most of
the other tracks in a doomed effort to remain interested throughout.
The album does have enough potential for others to find it more
rewarding however, so it may be worth a try.
