Mord - _Christendom Perished_
(Southern Lord, 2006)
by: T. DePalma (2.5 out of 10)
The latest lure from Southern Lord seems to reinforce every negative criticism about the label since becoming more active in the distribution of black metal.

Composed of eight "Opuses" (the final track is presumably miss-labeled with the Roman numerals "IX") Mord's debut delivers an imitation of veteran groups like Marduk and Impaled Nazarene, with minor references to Deicide and Immortal. Not surprisingly, this can't even be considered a fair reprise of the more enthralling years of those groups -- still too risky. _Christendom Perished_ is thirty-six minutes that blur into a mediocre headache dispatched with the usual imagery: ruined cathedrals, hatchets, paint and bone ornaments; the kind of creative limitation that ironically guarantees a certain amount of success: "Previous 7" release on Southern Lord currently out of print and in demand!"

In addition, the pair comprising Mord is billed as "native" Norwegians, although one of them is a member of the Polish groups Anima Damnata and Hell-Born, while the lyrics to _Christendom Perished_ are shown in Polish on their website. What the whole story is there, I don't know, but have no trouble accepting either country as home to such purely mercantile output.
