Savory death metal with a slow and somewhat frigid take on the Floridian style (somewhere between Malevolent Creation and post-_Human_ era Death), Vore issues another intriguing performance of their marauding sound. The band's strength lies in the patience of their composition, letting each muscular reverberation close in on the next in constricting answers before finally pummeling the whole damn thing through the ground and watching the dust spread. Although there is a tendency to use more technical fretwork here and there, this comes across as shallow and competitive, neither impressive nor an improvement from their last album.Produced by Colin Davis, who's known to wrench the life from a given recording and render it into stiff, technical data, _Maleficious_ is captured in crisp detail and so spotless it feels eerily synthetic, but quite the opposite of damaging. Their labored minimalism and spacious compositions leave room for ideas to settle in a cold, calculated entrapment, becoming enjoyable as a clear, almost didactic, dissection of form.
