Crowpath - _Sons of Sulphur_
(Earache Records, 2006)
by: Jackie Smit (8.5 out of 10)
Imagine if you will the abrasive intensity of The Red Chord combining with the crust-laced chaos of Brutal Truth and you'll start to scratch the surface of what lies in store on _Sons of Sulphur_. Indeed, had the dictionary made provision for the musical equivalent of the word "corrosive", this Swedish mob's third full-length effort would most definitely have been a hot contender for the shortlist, with even the album's slowest moments sounding positively bludgeoning. Yet _Sons of Sulphur_ is about much more than simply jarring the listener with blast after blast of undiluted aggression. What separates Crowpath from the many other acts who have attempted this style is their ability to make sense of the metallic anarchy by employing a host of clever techniques. From the surprisingly
traditional chug of "Chased, Caught & Charged" to ominous opening strains and jaw-dropping experimentation on "Children of Boredom", _Sons of Sulphur_ is as exhilarating and interesting as it is cathartic. Add to that an unnerving lyrical preoccupation with arson and ornithology, and you have the stuff of aural nightmares.
