As the first signings to Keep of Kalessin mainman Arnt O. Grønbech's new imprint, there's clearly some responsibility on the part of Bloodthorn to fly the flag for the label and get fans excited about what the future may hold. And as safe bets go, this Norweigian quartet certainly isn't a poor choice by any stretch of the imagination, despite having drawn the ire from a number of fans when they made their transition from black to death metal with _Under the Reign of Terror_. Their fourth album sees them continue down this route, largely dropping the sporadic rhythms in favour of a markedly less jilted approach, and for the most part _Genocide_ forges ahead with the accelerator pedal firmly stuck to the floor. It helps that Knut "Fug" Prytz's production job pours an extra splash or two of lighter fluid into the furnace so to speak, but in the face of such vitriolic numbers as "Blood & Iron" and "They Will Arise" such embellishments are hardly necessary. Though not quite the most inventive blend of death and black metal you'll hear anytime soon, Bloodthorn inject their every riff with enough class and conviction to make the album an exciting and decidedly un-American alternative to the many high profile releases that are headed in from across the pond in 2006.
