Stormfagel - _Den Nalkande Stormen_
(Cold Meat Industry, 2005)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
_Den Nalkande Stormen_ is a flawless amalgam of martial, folk and neo-classical -- so flawless that I initially had a problem believing that this is a mere debut. But mastermind Andreas Neidhardt has apparently been in various other projects for at least a decade, and his cumulative experience has clearly been of no little benefit. A strong atavistic flavor is present, and this is achieved primarily through the use of heavy percussion and Eva Mag's dreamy vocals. Despite the putative Swedish status of this project, Eva sings entirely in her native Hungarian. Although she occasionally ventures out of key, it is a pity that greater use wasn't made of her ethereal vocals. And it has not just her voice that possesses this quality: the entire album is imbued with an otherworldly vibe, even when displaying more bombastic tendencies. The best way to appreciate this CD is to simply sit back, close your eyes and allow yourself to be transported to times long since past.
