Detonation - _Portals to Uphobia_
(Osmose Productions, 2005)
by: Aaron McKay (9 out of 10)
After some considerable speed bumps slowing the release of this new album, _Portals to Uphobia_ saw the light of day in October 2005. The Dutch foursome known as Detonation began in mid 1997 under the name of Infernal Dream, changing the band's moniker to Detonation a year later and recording a four track MCD called _Lost Euphoria_ in the waning months of 1999. Known for their heavily melodic death / thrash infusion, Holland's Detonation further confound their technical efforts with this remarkable _Portals to Uphobia_ release. This disc's advancement in sophistication found on the heels of their 2002 _An Epic Defiance_ CD is abundantly clear and well integrated into Detonation's highly sought after niche. It is a difficult undertaking to plow inroads among this crushing and melodic scene well established by the likes of Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, but Detonation has done exactly that while sacrificing none of the exhaustive ferment fans would expect.

Koen Romeijn's aggressively fierce vocal style while pulling double duty on guitar with Mike Ferguson is punishing, yet gluttonous fans will consistently crawl back for more. Hardcore percussion enthusiasts will delight in the skillful power delivered by Detonation drummer Thomas Kalksma; it is encouraging to know that devastation like this is still sought after in the field. Cannibal Corpse's Alex Webster must smile to himself when listening to Otto Schimmelpenninck's bass work on _PtU_. It was widely known that imitation is the highest form of flattery; while not a blatant duplication of form, Otto's style is something of a tip-of-the-hat to Alex's technique.

By the second cut from the disc, the title track will fully capture your curiosity, and by the instrumental "Lost Euphoria part III", just over midway through, you'll have laid bare the intensity Detonation has in store on _PtU_. The ten tracks comprising this offering abundantly demonstrate an experienced band while leaving room for expanding the group's future aspirations. If this portal is a gateway somewhere, I'll just bide my time in anticipation to see where Detonation takes us next. Incredible endeavor, gentlemen!
