Straight from the deepest pits of hell -- or whatever other unholy metal platitude makes you salivate -- this rabid little demon of an album seems determined to show the new crop of bands how heavy metal should be done. The wordily titled _Fellatrix Discordia Pantokrator_ from the equally wordily named Portuguese veterans Filii Nigrantium Infernalium is the band's first full-length, even though they actually started their activity over a decade ago, breaking up in 1996 and then resurfacing a few years later with a 7" EP. If you've never heard black/thrash sung in Portuguese, then you'll be in for a surprise. Here is a band that not only does that, but also briefly incorporates a riff made up of Chopin's funeral march into the tail end of the album's first track proper -- and it actually works. This is black/thrash alright, but there is a lot of old-school heavy metal attitude to it rather than some empty revivalist attitude. _FDP_ is a very riff-based album, with shredding guitars, cascading drums and agonizing vocals that give the music a nice desperate feel -- and it's not all bile, as there as some subtle touches to the music as well (e.g. "Cães de Guerra"). Despite some less remarkable passages that cause the album to lose some steam after its midpoint, FNI seem to have been able to at last realize their potential, and _FDP_ is one angry, enjoyable slab of metal.
