Singaporean death metal veterans Rudra have finally broken free from mediocrity with this fourth album. A chaotic web of crushing death metal rhythm is woven round the core of traditional Indian chants and melodies, making for a hypnotic yet rousing musical journey reminiscent of the greatest Nile albums. Atonal solos vie with mystical acoustic passages to create a sense of looming dread, and contribute to the overall complexity of the album, which is pretty formidable considering the myriad tempo shifts and stylistic intricacies so effortlessly woven into the compositional tapestry of each track. Complexity is certainly upped a notch from their previous outings, but this material still manages to retain an old-school death / thrash vibe, more obvious here than on previous recordings, that balances the traditional-music sections perfectly. Rudra have always lain somewhat in the shadow of Singaporean legends Impiety, but this world-class album shows their stellar capability in composing and performing exceptional death metal to the highest standard.
