Listening to Brazilian act Mythological Cold Towers, I couldn't help but wonder what to call their style. Upon visiting their label's website, I found a suitable answer: "battle doom". Having been around for almost a decade, I had heard their name before; yet this was still the first album of theirs I was hearing, so I didn't know what to expect. _The Vanished Pantheon_ is an epic sort of doom/death metal, strangely imbued with a bellicose feel. Its pace is relatively quick for something coming out on Firebox's doom metal sub-label Firedoom, with keyboards used throughout for atmosphere and bombast. The songwriting aims high, with lengthy tracks that attempt to follow interesting paths. For all its attempts at creating grandiose pieces however, MCT don't succeed on every occasion -- for instance, opener "When the Solstice Reaches the Apogee" is quite good, but then "Tula" is rather annoying with its repetitive nature. Meanwhile the production job isn't bad, but it isn't as clear as it could have been, with some of the keyboard effects and clean vocals also leaving something to be desired. When they get it right, MCT are able to create some interesting and potent sequences; but unfortunately there isn't enough of that on _The Vanished Pantheon_ to make the album really stand out.
