With the glory days of Strife and Earth Crisis now well and truly behind us, and hardcore being watered down by the increasingly loathsome corporate malaise of metalcore, it's good to see that bands like Massachusetts' Since the Flood are still flying high the flag for good old-fashioned testosterone-fuelled aggression. _Valor & Vengeance_ is about as straightforward an addition to the genre as you can imagine, similar in sound to last year's Frontside release and almost certainly of the same pitbull-like temperament as albums like _Breed the Killers_ and _In This Defiance_. Indeed vocalist Chuck is a man possessed by the spirit of a rabid rotweiller as he tears into acid-laced diatribes like "24K", "This World Is Dead to Me" and "These Scars", his gruff roar perfectly complementing the almost oppressively heavy riffing. The excellence lies in the execution of these songs -- they aren't exactly the most original hardcore ditties you'll likely have come across, but when they're played with this much unapologetic alacrity, they become very hard to fault.
