I wish metal bands would stop hiding behind vague, metaphorical
titles. But no, Devilry from Finland prefer to remain rooted in all
that is abstract and ambiguous, with a title like _Muslim Genocide_
and lyrics like "Numbing blare of odious canticles / Reverberates
over arid land / Devotees ejaculate lunatic chants / Turbaned retards
prostrated noses in yellow sand" and "Vomit inducing imposing pompous
spires / Pulverized to the defiled ground / All-consuming profane
decimation lust / Mosques leveled down to dust".In all seriousness, I think it is up to each listener to decide
whether he finds the theme and lyrical content of this _Muslim
Genocide_ 7" EP any more or less interesting or morally objectionable
than the preaching of other hateful ideologies that is so common in
the metal underground -- to which the above lyrics could easily be
adapted -- and whether he even cares. So let's dedicate a couple of
lines to the music, shall we?
What Devilry have to offer from a musical perspective is described as
"violent death metal", which means that aggression and vitriol are
cranked up, while technicality and sophistication suffer the opposite
treatment. _Muslim Genocide_ is raw, old-school, thrashy and mean.
However, it lacks impact due to its excessively upfront vocals and
ineffective lower end; and while the songs are quite acceptable, the
EP just isn't very remarkable in any particular way. This reduces its
relevance in today's saturated scene to something only a minority will
care about -- probably a Muslim hating, vinyl loving minority.
