Horna - _Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne_
(The End / Woodcut Records, 2005)
by: Aaron McKay (3 out of 10)
Some might say consistent, but realistically, the Finnish outfit Horna is miserably representative of the whole black metal standard in every elementary aspect. Other than the rather laudable musical variance found on "Vala Pedolle", the full-length's third cut, the riff repetition song after song on the rest of the disc begins to sound like timing belt on a rusted out Volkswagen Beetle. It nearly goes without saying, all the elements of "the devil said this, Lucifer said that, Satan hit me with a wiffle ball bat" are present, exposing Horna's fatigued mantra track after exhausting track. Marketing themselves as the "sinister werewolf kult of Horna", this outfit cites their inception year as 1993, and released their demo _Varjoissa_ in 1995. A decade later, the production on practically all forty-nine minutes of music contained within _Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne_ sounds cluttered, messy and -- worst of all -- rushed. After such a long time on the scene, fans have some right to expect a certain level of maturation if not inspiration. Judging from Horna's fairly prolific back catalog, there is always hope for the next effort.
