Sargatanas Reign - _Bloodwork_
(Regain Records, 2005)
by: Jackie Smit (8 out of 10)
It's fascinating to consider the impact that something trivial and seemingly entirely insignificant can make, particularly when it comes to the arts. Take Sargatanas Reign for example. Performing a fairly typical brand of old school US death metal, _Bloodwork_ could just as easily be another above-average release to be enjoyed for a few fleeting moments, before being discarded like yesterday's newspaper. Instead, by incorporating some truly unique, inventive and, more importantly, noticeable bass-lines into their material, this Swedish five-piece transform themselves into a proposition that's altogether more interesting and remains captivating for the majority of the record. Subsequently, the other ingredients in the band's brutal cocktail also end up sounding ever-so-slightly more lethal -- which in a genre so saturated with talent is not a negligible achievement at all.
