Origin Blood - _Mr. Jakker Daw_
(RAHW Production, 2005)
by: Pedro Azevedo (6.5 out of 10)
Thrash metal with a hefty dose of Swedish riffing and clean vocal
choruses is what Origin Blood have to offer. Heard it before, have
you? Granted, it's not a novel concept; but Origin Blood display a
considerable knack for imbuing their music with enough quirky twists
to produce something unusual. _Mr. Jakker Daw_ is by no means without
its more generic passages, but occasionally the listener is treated to
a variety of unexpected tempos, vocal approaches and riff sequences.
Origin Blood clearly work hard to incorporate more into their music
than just what is barely sufficient to keep a couple of riffs and a
chorus sewn together, and that is where their strength resides. The
music is reasonably aggressive, the choruses are decent for the genre,
and both production and musicianship are of a high calibre; but it
would have been much more forgettable if the whole album was as
generic as it sometimes gets. A very unnecessary ballad closes the
album on a less than impressive note, leaving in its wake an album
that shows promise but remains too hit-and-miss to really shine.
