CoC : Deeds of Flesh - Crown of Souls : Review

The trouble with Deeds of Flesh has been, and is likely to always be, their apparent inability to sell their death metal schtick for the duration of a full-length album. The result is -- as far back even as 1995's _Trading Pieces_ -- records that get off to a cracking start before typically descending into a flurry of mass bludgeoning. Or too much of a good thing, depending on where you stand on the matter. That said, _Crown of Souls_ makes a pretty good effort to overcome this, and only a band like Deeds of Flesh would be able to mix in a few new grooves or the odd fresh rhythm change and make an album come off as something of an evolution. But at its core -- and very blatantly so, I might add -- Deeds of Flesh are still producing very typical atonal US death metal, and whatever steps _Crown of Souls_ takes forward will be indiscernible to all but a trained ear.
