Naglfar - _Pariah_

Let's face it: Naglfar have never been anything more than Dissection wannabes, and so those expecting _Pariah_ to be anything more than another attempt at recapturing the magic of _Storm of the Light's Bane_ are seriously deluding themselves. That said though, by their own standards, Naglfar have most definitely outdone themselves this time around. _Pariah_ is well executed, dark and almost relentlessly aggressive. It also ticks most of the other tickboxes of the modern metal album along the way: superb production, and admirable technicality; just don't go in expecting anything by way of a surprise or a halfway original idea. Then again, as anyone who heard Dissection's "taster" EP last year can attest, the founding fathers of the genre aren't exactly contributing much to it at the moment either.[Pedro Azevedo: "The lights are on, but nobody's home. This sums up _Pariah_ for me well enough. Naglfar (now without Jens Rydén) have most of the ingredients in place that made me thoroughly enjoy their previous output (especially 2003's _Sheol_), but this new effort seems mostly empty of real inspiration. The album leaves me quite indifferent, and includes a number of tired commercial black metal gimmicks that dampen the band's outstanding knack for agile, venomous melodies and breaks.
