Centinex - _World_
(Regain Records, 2005)
by: Jackie Smit (7.5 out of 10)
Like the Exhumeds and Exmortems of this world, Centinex have never quite appeared to be capable of capturing any compelling modicum of attention in the underground. Yet, as chronically relegated to the periphery of larger fan acceptance as they have been, their recorded output for the most part has been quite passable, and their eighth full-length certainly shows no signs of deviating from their prior consistency. Broken down into two "chapters", _World Declension_ is a largely winning blend of vintage thrash and modern death metal; a proposition which may not seem particularly exciting on paper, but proves considerably more captivating in execution. Tracks like "Victorious Dawn Rising" and "As Legions Come" trade off lightning-fast solos that could easily have emanated from the plectrum of Dave Mustaine, over a barrage of tuneful, chugging death metal riffing, which almost always maintains a distinct and unique identity. Whether or not this is enough to significantly elevate their fortunes is anyone's guess, but at the very least Centinex can pat themselves on the shoulders for offering a melodic slab of extremity that's several cuts above the raft of At the Gates clones that are currently doing the rounds.
