All My Faith Lost... - _As You're Vanishing in Silence_
(Cold Meat Industry, 2005)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
This stands out from most other Cold Meat Industry releases in that there is little reliance on electronic modes of producing music; the instruments used are violin, flute and piano accompanied by (male and female) vocals. The synth is used only occasionally. But like most other Cold Meat Industry releases, there is a strong focus on the creation of atmosphere and distaste for conventional verse-chorus-verse song structures. The dominant mood on this album is one of contemplative melancholia, reminiscent of bands on the Dark Symphonies label, most notably Maudlin of the Well. The vocals are pretty decent, but muted; presumably this is deliberately intended as a means of adding to the atmosphere. Not only is the synth seldom used, it is also subordinate to the other instruments -- yet I can't help but wonder whether this album would have been better off with just analogue instruments. This is definitely not an album for head banging; nor can it be seen as purely "wallpaper" music like label mates Raison d'Être. This is the kind of music that is best enjoyed in solitude with a glass of fine red.
