Society 1 - _The Sound That Ends Creation_
(Earache Records, 2005)
by: Jackie Smit (3.5 out of 10)
Goddammit, this is awful. And I'm not talking just a simple case of being below-par or comparatively poor. This is genuinely -- as a wise man once said -- proper rubbish. After scoring a lesser hit on their previous record with the track "Hate" (which in all fairness was actually quite enjoyable) one would have hoped that Matt Zane and his cohorts would at the very least have taken the song's response as an indication of what works for them as a band and duly proceeded to concentrate on their strengths with their sophomore effort. "It Isn't Me", while far more perfect, does start the record off with promise, but from there on out, it's all blue Mondays, as Society 1 proceed to tear through just about every cliché in the industrial metal handbook. There are exceptions: "Bleed" approaches something that almost resembles acceptable, while the inclusion of the very Van Halen-esque guitar solo "Enraptured" is a welcome break, despite being completely unnecessary and OTT in the grand scheme of the record. As for the rest of what's on offer, it's perhaps most fitting to point to a lyric on "6 Months", where the erstwhile pornographer declares: "I want to fuck the world." Assuming enough people are suckered into buying this garbage, Society 1 can pat themselves on the back for a mission thoroughly accomplished.
