3 Inches of Blood - _Advance & Vanquish_
(Roadrunner Records, 2004)
by: Jackie Smit (4 out of 10)
By now I'm sure that most of you have taken in at least a semblence of the hype surrounding this band, and it probably shouldn't surprise anyone to find Roadrunner Records (and the various media sources they have in their backpockets) once again crowing over what they claim to be "the next big thing", when countless other acts have been performing the very same style of music for years, only to be ridiculed for doing so. But Roadrunner ceased to be relevant many years ago, and it would be unfair to be prejudiced toward a band simply because they're signed to one of the most fly-by-night record labels to come along heavy metal's pike.

So what of the music on _Advance & Vanquish_ then? Well, to be perfectly frank, it sucks. The band's six members may not dress in spikes and leather the way their peers do, but from start to finish this very rarely amounts to anything more than fourth rate power metal, led by one of the absolute worst singers since Sabina Claasen decided to flex her pipes in Holy Moses. My advice therefore is simple: if you want to hear quality power metal, try the new Mystic Prophecy or Iced Earth records. As for me -- I have better things to do with my time then listen to bands that have nothing better to say than "Take the broadsword in your hand / Follow the orcs to their camp."
