Stormlord - _The Gorgon Cult_
(Scarlet Records, 2004)
by: Quentin Kalis (2 out of 10)
This is terrible. Just terrible. This has to be some of the worst music I have ever heard. (And I've arguably heard more than my fair share.)

The most cursory of listens would suggest that Stormlord are a typical third wave black metal band. But a closer (and torturous) proper listen suggests that Stormlord are first and foremost a heavy metal band, although they do their best to disguise it under a thin veneer of cliché darkness. (I've heard them being called "epic black metal", but don't be fooled: this is no Graveland.) The keyboards are incredibly annoying and overbearing, and if the song structures weren't so hackneyed, it would be a fatal flaw.

Their heavy metal roots are reflected in the choice of cover: a desecration of Iron Maiden's "Moonchild". Lyrically, the focus seems to be on the ancient mythology of various Pagan pantheons, though not nearly as well written as anything by Therion. The hybridisation is extremely poorly executed, playing to the weak points of both styles rather than the strengths. Recommended purely for those who want to know what the worst CD of 2004 sounds like.
