Genital Grinder - _Genital Grinder_
(Adipocere, 2003)
by: Pedro Azevedo (4 out of 10)
Lavish soundscapes of romantic, classically influenced metal, featuring clean male and female vocals as well as grand piano, violin, cello and a myriad other instruments to complement the soothing guitar tone -- a description that has absolutely nothing in common with Genital Grinder's self-titled debut, as you could probably guess from the less-than-subtle band name. Grindcore it is, and if you thought everything had already been invented in the death/grind genre before Genital Grinder came along... well, you may be right. Either way, these Parisiens certainly won't prove you wrong given the recycled nature of this self-titled debut album of theirs: this is good ol' fashioned grind, deeply rooted in the gore tradition. The more humorous and cartoonish kind of gore, mind you; in fact, all of the album's subject matter hangs between obviously humourous and somewhat childish -- not to mention downright silly like most of the choruses, interludes and the French sing-along in the final track. Genital Grinder can grind reasonably well though, and the album is not entirely a snooze-fest if you're in the mood for this kind of metal -- just don't expect a bulldozer like their far superior labelmates Morgue, because Genital Grinder are just a bit of harmless fun.
