Holocausto Canibal - _Sublime Massacre Corporeo_
(So Die Music, 2002)
by: Pedro Azevedo (7 out of 10)
Portugal's self-proclaimed most extreme band return with their second
full-length of "sick and twisted hyper speed brutality for all the
family". Holocausto Canibal make sure their intents are clearly stated
in advance through the album's gore-drenched front cover, and indeed
the entire release is consistent in its darkly humourous and gory
stance. _Sublime Massacre Corporeo_ opens with an orchestral(!) intro,
followed by the sound of someone basically puking his guts out. The
ensuing music, as you may already have guessed, features plenty of
blastbeats, death growls, downtuned guitar riffs, frequent changes of
pace and, of course, a multitude of introductory samples. The dirty,
cavernous production provides a suitable vehicle for the onslaught in
terms of both the decent punch it packs and its decidedly
non-mainstream approach. The brutal death metal on offer is of very
competent quality; the band is sufficiently tight and the songwriting
relatively varied, even if it doesn't stray far from the tried and
tested formulas of the genre (except for one particular track which
seems to have been recorded in reverse). A few irrelevant humourous
remixes close the album, but considering this is a 45 minute disc they
hardly cause any harm. Overall, it's that old verdict again: fans of
the genre, check this out; everyone else, stay away.
