Soulquake System - _Angry By Nature, Ugly By Choice_
(Black Mark, 1996)
by: Gino Filicetti (7 out of 10)
With a name like this one, I didn't know what to expect from Sweden's Soulquake System. Upon listening to the first few seconds of the opening track, "Strength To Strength," I was pleased to learn that SQS aren't just another metal band. The history of the band doesn't stretch all that far seeing how this is their first full length release. In 1995, SQS released the _Disbelief_ demo that was heralded by many as the 'best demo of 1995.' (According to their bio of course). The music on this CD is really catchy and full of groove. The vocals are definitely of hardcore origin, and the many five person, anthem-like chants are reminiscent of a lot of today's hardcore. Unfortunately, as the CD drew on, the music seemed to drag and wade knee deep in repetition, yet another similarity to today's hardcore. All in all, this music should please most, I found it quite good even though my boredom of all things hardcore is more than evident.
