Novembre - _Classica_
(Century Media, 2000)
by: Paul Schwarz (8 out of 10)
Taking a page out Opeth's book in their combining of complex and progressively developing guitar themes with the heaviness and grit of distorted metal riffing, Novembre defy my cynically low expectations. Though slightly more gothic and doom influences come to light on _Classica_ than on Opeth's releases, Novembre are still eminently comparable with the under-noticed Swedes. Though they may not live up to the uncommonly high standards we expect of Opeth, Novembre are not as far off as you might expect and beat out many other bands with their effective combination of melancholy and metal. "Nostalgiaplatz", "My Starving Bambina" or "Love Story" are alone proof enough that Novembre have musical talent combined with a good melodic sense, as well as the ability to pound with the percussive rage of death, the hypnotic hammer of doom and the blistered throat of black metal. However, with a ten year history and two previous albums behind them, it is not unwarranted that Novembre should have reached a high standard, it's just that so many don't. _Classica_ could be more consistent, but Novembre, though not in Opeth's league, are doing much better than the average band playing a similar trade.
