Mortiis - _Fodt Til a Herske_
(Earache re-issue, 1999)
by: Paul Schwarz (6 out of 10)
Super-simplistic in its twin keyboard strands and occasional war-drums, Mortiis' 1994 debut release certainly does betray the fact that these two tracks ("Fodt Til a Herske" parts 1 and 2, totalling over fifty minutes in all) were his first attempts at making music. It isn't exactly bad or good, rather just inconsequential. It neither significantly moves in the positive sense, nor irritates and prompts silencing for its poor quality. It is quite good backing music, and I expect for an animated film, documentary or even relatively impressionistic film it would make adequate, understated and mildly atmospheric keyboard backing music. However, sitting down to actually meditate on its every note reveals not only its simplistic content, but also its rather tedious structure. I am not a big fan of Mortiis in general, but if I wanted to listen to him, I would dig out _The Stargate_. _FTaH_ is definitely not worth its lengthy duration.
