Corporation 187 - _Subliminal Fear_
(Wicked World, 2000)
by: Paul Schwarz (6.5 out of 10)
Being Swedish, signed to Earache, praising eighties thrash legends like Slayer, and having a former member of Seance in their ranks, you might wonder whether I wasn't talking about The Haunted instead of our case in point, Corporation 187. Wittingly or unwittingly, Corporation 187 -are- riding the wave generated by The Haunted's impression-making arrival onto the extreme metal scene, back in 1998 with the release of their self-titled debut [CoC #34]. _Subliminal Fear_, the debut now in question, adopts a similar MO; meshing eighties aggression with a slick nineties coating. Corporation 187 pound out nine aggressive tracks totalling a mere 32 minutes with precision and finesse as their welcome bed fellows. However, though competence certainly does not evade, a defining characteristic, a reason to choose to listen to them as opposed to any other band, does. Vocalist Pelle never comes close to the intensity Peter Dolving generated on _The Haunted_, and despite their former credentials as a Slayer cover band, Corporation 187 never find that Slayer-esque vein of unleashed violence that The Haunted managed to commendably tap. All the same, if you're happy with tight snare drums and lots of thrashing guitars, then you may have a winner here.
