Cirrosis - _Reciclando Desesperacion_
(Independent, 1999)

Cirrosis hail from Mexico, and play semi-technical death metal. They claim to be a mix of Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Pestilence, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse, but I only really hear Meshuggah influences. That isn't to say that they're Meshuggah clones, but there are some obvious Meshuggah influences, such as the guitar solos in "Negando lo No Negado" and "Fariseos". The rest of their music is standard death metal, comparable at times to the rest of the bands in their list, but not really sounding like any of them all that much. Their music isn't overly brutal, but it's pretty heavy. However, it lacks the speed of a band like Cryptopsy, as the band are content with a more mid-paced, bludgeoning approach. The production is decent, but certainly could've been a little more powerful. (Perhaps the fact that I'm reviewing _RD_ from a collection of MP3s has something to do with this...) The songs vary in style quite a bit; some of them are moderately technical, whereas other songs aren't very technical at all. The playing is mostly good. The parts aren't extremely difficult, but they handle all of what they play with considerable aplomb. The vocals are standard death/thrash-type grunted/shouted vocals. There isn't too much here that you haven't heard before, but it's good for what it is. Hopefully the band can improve with their next release, by defining their own sound, perfecting their production, and narrowing their focus on what they do best.
