Irrbloss - _Hymns_
by: Quentin Kalis (2 out of 5)
Irrbloss present four tracks of melodic black metal, and whilst melody is usually the preserve of the more accessible metal acts, Irrbloss locate it within a rawer and grimmer context than most of the contemporaries, to negate any advance towards saccharinity. The presence of a number of decent riffs and melodies is a testament to their success in this regard, but they have unfortunately failed to build decent songs around them. Consequently, the songs sound disjointed and inchoate, as if insufficient time has been spent in the studio. I can appreciate the overwhelming desire and necessity of getting that first demo out, but such desire can lead to rushed material. Now that all-important and integral first step has been taken, perhaps future recordings will feature stronger material.
