My Lament - _Beneath the Hidden_
by: Quentin Kalis (3 out of 5)
My Lament are a Belgian act performing romantic death/doom along the lines of the unholy British triumvirate of the early '90s (Anathema, My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost, for the uninformed).

The riffing is suitably morose, and melodic riffs dominate the three lengthy songs. The vocals are the usual growls borrowed from death, but the clean vocals and spoken passages really do not work, and succeed in making the listener cringe in a manner they could not possibly have intended. Bad vocals aside, the major flaw is in the song construction, as their dour riffs are sandwiched inside songs whose lengths are a bit too ambitious for the band at this point in the career, with the result that the listener cries out for some judicious -- nay liberal -- editing.

Overall, this is not a particularly bad demo, and decent enough to suggest something more entertaining and demanding could result at a future date.
