Dark Abyss - _Ecclipse Declared_
by: Quentin Kalis (2.5 out of 5)
Dark Abyss are in essence a black metal band; others may disagree, and with good reason, as there is nary a grossly distorted guitar chord to be heard amongst the swathes of synths -- but the growls and snarls suggest otherwise. The songs are not structured like ambient soundscapes but are structurally similar to more conventional song numbers.

I like and appreciate what Dark Abyss is attempting; however, his biggest failing seem to be the tools at his disposal. The synths sound like they come straight from a Casio, and lies midway between Burzum's incarceration era meanderings and the creepy MIDI file atmosphere of the very first "Doom" game. I don't have a problem with the underlying melodies, which are simplistic in true black fashion -- just with the realization thereof. In time and with better tools, Dark Abyss could rival black symphonic masters Profanum.
