Rotting Christ - _Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy_
(Season of Mist, 2013)
by: Dan Lake (8 out of 10)
The nuanced, melodic Greek metal band with the white trash American black metal name, ladies and gentlefreaks, we give you: Rotting Christ! Since parting ways with their long-ago days as a bottom-feeding grind miasma, these Mediterranean masters have chased the opaline spiral of worldly, conscious heavy music steeped in the active awareness of spiritualism, history and myriad cultural depths. There are lots of reasons to love the simple bombastic blasphemy of their two-decade-old moniker, but the likelihood that it has turned away a substantial prospective audience is both high and unfortunate.

In the spirit of obstructing mass appreciation with naming conventions, Rotting Christ's latest is titled with untranslatable Greek characters that Season of Mist have chosen to pimp as meaning roughly "Do What Thou Wilt". Of course, that overloaded, overused phrase sells well in the metal community's Satan Suck-Off Contest, but it ignores the richer context that the Tolis brothers attempted to lay into record's structure. Where 2010's _Aealo_ armored itself in ancient Greek themes and war hymns, _Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy_ reaches far beyond southern Europe for inspiration. The album gathers occult legends and mythical demons from their dank roosts all over the planet and intends to overlay the cultural scavenger hunt with something much closer to "True To Your Own Spirit", in honor of the diverse groups who gave rise to the stories that inspired the Christ this time ‘round.

But how good is the music? It's Rotting Christ, for rottingchrissake! The album title points also to Sakis and Themis Tolis who, album after album, have wound themselves closer to their own spiritual truths. _Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy_ plays to all of the Christ's strengths: driving grooves, catchy melodic leads, co-opted ethnic flourishes, vocals full of forceful conviction. If you bow at the altar of the band's last few albums, then _Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy_ will have you inverted-crossing yourself and crying blood. If you've resisted associating with such a lowest-common-denominator name, _Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy_ is as good a place as any to start turning that baseless opinion around.
