Nexhymn - _Black Horizon_
(Independent, 2012)
by: Dan Lake (5 out of 10)
In _Black Horizon_, Colorado natives Nexhymn present twenty-two minutes of slick, modern sounding death metal. This is not the knuckle-dragging savagery of the old school, nor the sparkling technical ambition of the new, but some comfortable median setting. Nexhymn wallow in their buzzing riffs and whip-smart percussion, but fail to truly excite. The sticker on the front boldly proclaims the record's "female-fronted brutal death metal vocals", which is good, because if you weren't told, you'd never know. The monotone grunting carved into the mix mimics every other hyper-aggressive death growl you've heard. None of these six (sick) tracks is bad, but ultimately the cover's nascent mushroom cloud tells the whole tale: high-impact violence yielding highly effective destruction, but resulting in 100% sterilization.
