Brutal death metal and goregrind aim to construct a world. it is a dark grimy world devoid of hope and sunshine, but a world nonetheless. Since the early '90s, the style of combining death metal with vivid violence has gone through mild reprimanding by the mainstream public. Almost immediately, the bands have defended themselves with repeated claims about the lyrics attached to the world of fantasy. Acts of extreme violence are laid out in excruciating detail with little thought proposed on reason, judgment and remorse. Surprisingly, there is a poetic art when it comes to writing gore-driven lyrics. The shock and awe only comes with the right choices of nouns, verbs and most importantly, adjectives. The correct placement of rancid, rotting or reeking could mean the difference between a memorable and forgettable song. Today, we live in a time when a lot has been said, drawn and done. We live in a post-"Necropedophile" landscape. The world in which bands now play has already been splattered by Cannibal Corpse's 1992 opus _Tomb of the Mutilated_. Where is there left to go but the sensual act of coitus?

It takes a special album to make me nervous about writing the review on a shared computer. Gorgasm has been floating around at the bottom of the brutal death tank for the majority of the late '90s. In the early '00s, Gorgasm released two records followed by a seven year silence. Today, there is only one original member, with 3/4s of The Human Filleted filling in. Musically, Gorgasm is more related to death metal than goregrind. Their deep groove moves the album along in a predatory swagger, dropping bottles of chloroform in its path. The kickdrum and guitar dominate the mix, with the drum splash acting as punctuation. I can imagine the song being written as an extended drum solo with the guitar, bass and finally vocals following en tow. Despite this critical jest, the musical side to _Orgy of Murder_ rises to the top, displaying a technical surf of fluid percussion and unrelenting brutality. This deeper rhythmic style could be compared to yet another Cannibal Corpse album -- namely 1994's _The Bleeding_. Once you have attached yourself to the music, then comes the moral dilemma with the lyrics. While there are some who find nothing wrong with what I am about to discuss, the majority of civilized culture may have some small contentions.

_Orgy of Murder_ has to be reviewed intellectually, because to allow yourself to experience it emotionally is devastating and empty. The 1999 EP _Stabwound Intercourse_ would lay out the direction for Gorgasm with their shivering depictions of sexual violence. Rape, torture and perverse dismemberment are all hallmarks for this band. While the majority of goregrind and pornogrind has touched upon these subjects, the level of tension and complete lack of humor gives _Orgy of Murder_ a unique vile character. Since the songs are first person accounts, the album plays out like a dark revenge fantasy where nameless women pay for their transgressions with unjust punishments. The addition of spiteful words like "whore", "cunt" and "bitch" makes Gorgasm the guy at the party with unresolved issues and more than one butterfly knife in his pocket.

It's almost impossible to like this album, but almost as difficult to fault it. Heavy metal's preoccupation with the dark side of nature should be expected to overlap into uncomfortable territory. Romantically, I am looking for this type of music to be used in an album depicting the joys and exuberance of love and happiness. I think the contrast would be unexpected and amazing. Until then, I am going to erase my hard drive and take a long, scalding shower.
