Wolok - _Caput Mortuum_
(Those Opposed Records, 2009)
by: Quentin Kalis (4 out of 10)
To Wolok's credit, they have an unusual and unique sound -- a positive in a field littered with the corpses of Burzum and Darkthrone clones with half the talent and none of the vision -- and consequently would be foolish to drastically alter their sound. This they have not done, and _Caput Mortuum_ sounds pretty much like its predecessor. Whirring riffs that sound as if they emanate form within the midst of a ferocious maelstrom with rudimentary synth tones dancing above and accompanied by distorted vocals provide a listening experience like no other. All the more unfortunate that this isn't really worth listening to; there is so much repetition in the black metal underground and not enough creativity that I really wanted to like an album by a black metal band that really did something different without resort to electronica, but was unable to.
