CoC : Hot Buttered Anal - Lies : Review

Hot Buttered Anal are essentially a crossover band, combining elements from thrash and hardcore (with SOD, Exhorder and DRI being the obvious influences). As for the lyrics, consider them as a combination of the erudite taste of Cannibal Corpse, the piercing socio-political analysis of MOD and the feminist leanings of Dismember. They don't appear to take themselves too seriously, which sounds good in theory, with an acoustic strummer, a country and western number -- a film noir soundtrack with lyrics that one wouldn't expect to find on songs of that particular style, to put it mildly. Clearly they're ripping it off, but with a subtlety befitting the rash of "spoof" movies such as "Scary / Epic / Date / Superhero Movie" and sounding just as forced. Nor am I sure what they are trying to achieve. Do they wish to be a new SOD? If so, they will need something a bit more advanced than "We're Not Retarded" and "Everything Sucks". Or do they wish to be a conventional metal band, where songs such as "Choke the Bitch" are unremarkable? I'm not even sure the band knows what they really wish to achieve, and the entire album is messy and confused.
