Abominant - _Warblast_
(Deathgasm Records, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Abominant formed at the tail end of death metal's heyday, but never achieved the critical heights of many of their peers. They have stuck and have managed to inflict no fewer than seven previous full-lengths on the wider world. I am not familiar with their prior work, but Abominant do not sound like the sort who believe in wussy concepts such as "progression" and "growth". I don't doubt that this is better produced, more cohesive, focused and better composed than their earliest efforts, but the old-school death metal essence remains unchanged. There is a liking for intense blasting sections that would warm the cockles of the dark heart of any Marduk and Impiety fan -- and just like those bands, the near unbroken blasting can get tiresome and ever so tedious. This is muted by a playing time that struggles to reach the 35 minute mark, but not completely. Until it reaches that point, it's a rollicking ride.
