Noctis - _For Future's Past_
(Prime Cuts Music, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Noctis features current and ex-members from a variety of West Australian bands, including Pathogen, Bereavement and Vespers Descent. This EP is essentially a teaser for an upcoming full-length that will presumably include a similar dark take on metal, like a Down Under version of Katatonia or Opeth. The songwriting and performance skills are above average, with a progressive edge that invariably hints at Opeth. A stronger production would provide a bit more bite, but the clean vocals, while passable, sound weedy rather than emotional and need work. As emotional as the music is, it doesn't provide the mindfuck that Anathema or Katatonia at their finest are able to provide. Nonetheless, it is early days, and not only is Noctis stronger than any of its feeder bands; it is not inconceivable that in days to come they could provide a counterpoint to the current Scandinavian dominance.
