Angel Blake - _The Descended_
(Dynamic Arts Records, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7.5 out of 10)
Having risen from the ashes of The Crown, Angel Blake have unleashed a belated sophomore effort, after changing both labels and vocalists. While I am unaware of how the previous vocalist fared, the current one is less than convincing, but sufficiently capable so as to not be a complete embarrassment. They compensate for this with plenty of memorable melodies and catchy hooks, albeit within a melancholic context reminiscent of Finnish contemporaries Sentenced and Amorphis. The stronger material tends to be in the first half of the album, with the quality dropping shortly in the latter half, culminating in a feeble attempt at a power ballad in "Silent Voice", which also highlights the limits of the vocalist's abilities. Angel Blake won't get the attention that The Crown received, not with an album like this, but those with a liking for melodic metal will find quite a few songs that justify repeat listens.
