With Glen Benton's legal woes shackling Deicide's future to the sheet-rock of uncertainty for the time being, it's good to see that his partner-in-crime (and Deicide's principal creative engine) Steve Asheim hasn't decided to unpack the lawn furniture just yet. Colluding with Council of the Fallen's Kevin Quirion, Order of Ennead sees Asheim take a step away from the demonic brand of death metal he works with in his day job, instead delving into distinctly darker terrain. Tracks like the blistering opener "Seeking the Prophets" and "The Culling" possess more than a faint whiff of Scandinavian black metal, albeit squeezed through a modern ringer, and for the most part Order of Ennead pay faithful, if uninventive, lip-service to their influences. What ultimately manages to set them apart, and ensure that their Earache debut is memorable for the right reasons, is Order of Ennead's wrought iron aggression -- fuelled in part by Asheim's astonishing performance on the skins. Not that I'm ready to happily cut him loose from his primary musical concern, mind you. But speaking purely as a fan, if this ends up being the path he travels post-Deicide, the future won't be quite as bleak as I may initially have forecast.
