Belphegor - _Pestapokalypse VI_
(Nuclear Blast, 2006)
by: Jackie Smit (8.5 out of 10)
With an album as reassuringly solid as 2005's _Goatreich - Fleshcult_ all but guaranteeing that more eyes would surely be on the inevitable follow-up, it's hardly surprising that Austria's finest would pull out all the stops on their Nuclear Blast debut. With a beefier production that makes comparisons to Behemoth all but inevitable, _Pestapokalypse VI_ is perhaps Belphegor's most assured and confident release to date.

Still lighting a torch for both death and black metal, the opening cannonade of "Belphegor - Hell's Ambassador" and "Seyn Todt In Schwarz" might indicate a barefaced sequel, but listen further and attenuated strains of experimentation become more and more prevalent. Among the most striking of these are the disarmingly eerie chorus for "Bluhtsturm Erotika" and the utterly breathtaking lead that kicks in right around the halfway mark to "Sanctus Perversum". These are just two highlights among many however, and truth be told I'd be surprised if anyone can listen to this record without being at least a slight bit impressed.

_Pestapokalypse VI_ is fourty minutes of blistering, atmospheric brutality that is nothing short of an overwhelming triumph for its creators.
