Melencolia Estatica - _Melencolia Estatica_
(Aeternitas Tenebrarum, 2006)
by: Pedro Azevedo (6.5 out of 10)
Playing mostly mid to fast-paced black metal that is nonetheless unmistakably depressive, Italy's apparently female-led Melencolia Estatica present their self-titled debut on Aeternitas Tenebrarum Music Foundation. Comprised of four tracks ranging from six to ten minutes in length each, the album presents an unusually prominent bass sound that increases its uniqueness in what is becoming a somewhat crowded genre. The music is generally melodic, but in a rather harsh way: it's certainly not a hideously underproduced wall of noise, but it's definitely not all clean melodies either.

There is a considerable element of spontaneity and lack of polish to the music as well, and the tunefulness and timekeeping of the whole thing can certainly be questioned on a few occasions. This lends the music a natural underground aura however, and while that might drive away listeners with a more demanding ear, it might just as easily please others who are looking for less substantial qualities.

Nevertheless, the song structures indicate that some planning did take place, and for its duration the record flows well -- though it seems doubtful that it could succeed with a longer running time than half an hour. As far as debuts go however, Melencolia Estatica have managed to lay the foundations for a possible follow-up where their style and approach may be further developed and refined.
